Stenhousemuir 0 Berwick Rangers 1
Berwick extended their lead at the top of the third division after a hard fought but well deserved victory over closest challengers Stenhousemuir at Ochilview Park.
Both sides went into the game after mini slumps and were eager to get back on the rails. The game started promisingly with attacking football, and the Borderers were unlucky not to open the scoring after five minutes when a Kevin Gordon flick eluded Willie McCulloch in the home goal, but Greg Denham was able to clear.
After several chances and half chances at both ends, the league leaders took the lead in the 25th minute from the penalty spot. Kevin McLeish scored his sixth league goal of the campaign after Robbie Henderson had brought down Gareth Hutchison in the box.
The Warriors could have equalised four minutes later when Colin Cramb headed a cross-field header by John McKeown goalwards but his effort, although accurate, lacked power and was comfortably saved by Craig Coyle.
After the resumption Berwick always looked the more threatening and home keeper McCulloch was tested on several occasions.
The home side thought that they had equalised in the 67th minute when Cramb stroked the ball into the net from a Paul McGrillen pass, but the 'goal' was disallowed for an earlier infringement and Cramb was booked for his protests.
Although the leaders always looked the more likely to get a goal, the match was poised on a knife edge until the final whistle when Berwick were able to celebrate the win and extend their unbeaten run to double figures at the same time.
